AI for kids: a parent's starting point for ages 7–12

If your child already asks AI to answer questions, write stories, or make pictures, the question isn't whether they'll use AI — they will. It's whether they learn to use it well. What AI actually is, in terms a 7–12 year-old can hold

Most of the confusion parents feel comes from a bad mental model, so it's worth fixing first. The AI your child will meet is a prediction machine: it has processed an enormous amount of human writing, images, or code, and it produces what tends to come next. It is not looking things up in a database and it has no sense of whether what it says is true.

That single fact explains nearly all of the behaviour that surprises people. It explains why AI can write a beautiful paragraph about a book that doesn't exist. A child who holds this model isn't disillusioned by AI — they're calibrated, which is a much more useful state.

The four habits worth building at 7–12

  1. 1. Think first Have a go, or at least a guess, before asking. The moment before the answer arrives is where the thinking happens, and it's the thing AI most easily removes.
  2. 2. Direct clearly Vague in, vague out. Learning to say exactly what you want — the length, the tone, the constraints, the goal — is a communication skill that pays off well beyond AI.
  3. 3. Check the work Assume something in there is wrong and go find it. Framed as a game, children are excellent at this, and it inoculates them against the deeper risk of trusting a fluent voice.
  4. 4. Explain it back If they can't say in their own words how it works or why it's right, they collected an output rather than learned something. One question, thirty seconds, and it's the entire quality gate.

The mistake to avoid: choosing between banning and handing it over

Most households land at one of two extremes. Ban it, and your child meets AI anyway — at a friend's house, on a school device, or at fourteen with no habits and no adult in the conversation. Hand it over, and the default behaviour takes hold: ask, receive, move on, learn nothing.

The middle path isn't complicated, it's just less dramatic. Use a tool built for the age. Keep it in shared space. Insist on something finished at the end. Ask them to explain it. That's the whole programme, and it's small enough to actually do on a Tuesday evening — which is the main thing a parenting strategy needs to be.

The questions parents ask most

At what age should kids start learning about AI?
Conversationally from about five — the phone-keyboard autocomplete demo works fine at that age. Hands-on with a guided tool from about seven. Solo use of general-purpose chatbots isn't appropriate for this age group at all; most set a minimum age of 13 in their own terms.
Is AI going to make my child lazy?
It can, and that's the risk worth watching. It happens when AI answers questions the child hasn't attempted. It doesn't happen when the child is directing AI to build something, because there the child still has to decide, test, and fix.
Do I need to understand AI to guide my child?
No. You need one accurate idea — it predicts rather than knows — and four habits. Your not knowing is actually useful: looking it up together is exactly the behaviour you want them to copy.
What should my child learn first — coding or AI?
