AI activities for kids: 10 free ways to explore how AI works
The best activities for teaching a child how AI works mostly don't require an AI account — several don't require a screen at all. What they require is a small, surprising moment where the machine's behaviour becomes visible. Here are ten we'd actually run at a kitchen table, with what each one teaches and roughly how long it takes.
How to use this list
These are ordered roughly from youngest to oldest, but the ages are soft — a curious seven-year-old will enjoy activity six, and an eleven-year-old will still find activity one funny. Each takes between five and thirty minutes, and the only equipment you might need is a phone, a pen, and an AI tool you already have access to.
One rule makes all of them work better: let your child be the one who notices. The activity fails if you explain the lesson at the end. It succeeds when they say "wait, that's wrong" and you say "huh — why do you think that happened?"

Off the screen (ages 5–9)
- 1. 1. The autocomplete story — 5 minutes, no AI account Open your phone's keyboard, type "Today I want to", then tap the middle suggested word over and over. Read the resulting nonsense aloud. Teaches: prediction from patterns is exactly how a language model works — and why it can produce a fluent sentence about nothing.
- 2. 2. Robot sandwich — 15 minutes, no screen Your child gives you instructions to make a sandwich and you follow them with malicious literalness. "Put the butter on the bread" gets you the tub placed on the loaf. Teaches: precise instructions matter, and machines don't fill in what you meant.
- 3. 3. Twenty questions as a classifier — 10 minutes, no screen Play twenty questions, then afterwards write down which questions split the possibilities best. Teaches: how a machine narrows down an answer by asking what distinguishes things, which is the intuition behind classification.
- 4. 4. Teach a paper robot to sort — 20 minutes, paper only Draw ten animals. Ask your child to write rules that sort them into 'pets' and 'wild'. Then hand them a hamster in a zoo, or a fox in a garden. Teaches: rules learned from examples break at the edges — which is where AI errors live too.
With an AI tool, side by side (ages 8–12)
- 1. 5. The expert test — 10 minutes Ask an AI to explain the thing your child knows best in the world: their game, their sport, their book series. Have them mark it out of ten and circle the mistakes. Teaches: confident tone is unrelated to accuracy — learned from the one topic where they outrank the machine.
- 2. 6. Same question, two sessions — 5 minutes Ask an identical question in two fresh chats and compare the answers. Teaches: it's generating, not retrieving. Anything that gives two different answers to one question isn't a reference book.
- 3. 7. Prompt ladder — 15 minutes Ask for a story three ways: "write a story"; "write a funny story about a dog"; "write a five-sentence funny story about a dog who is scared of grass, ending with a twist". Line the three up. Teaches: specificity is the skill — and the child can see the improvement they caused.
- 4. 8. Catch the confident mistake — 15 minutes Ask about something genuinely obscure — a small local landmark, a very minor character. Then verify with a real source. Teaches: AI would rather produce something plausible than say "I don't know", which is the single most useful thing to know about it.
Build something (ages 9–12)
- 1. 9. Direct a tiny game — 30 minutes Have your child describe a simple game they want — dodge the falling rocks, catch the good things — and direct an AI to build it, testing and correcting as they go. Teaches: the whole loop at once, plan → instruct → test → fix. This is the activity that most resembles the actual skill.
- 2. 10. Interview the AI about itself — 15 minutes Have your child ask it: how do you know things? do you remember me? can you be wrong? who made you? Then discuss which answers they believe and why. Teaches: healthy scepticism aimed at the machine's own account of itself — a surprisingly advanced move that eleven-year-olds enjoy.
Practical questions
- Do I need an AI account to do these?
- Not for the first four — they're paper, phone keyboard, and conversation. Activities 5–10 need access to an AI tool, and for under-13s that should be a kid-appropriate one or your own account with you present.
- What age are these for?
- Roughly 5–12, in the order given. The unplugged ones work from about five; the checking activities land best from about eight, when children can hold the idea that a confident voice might be wrong.
- Which single activity should I do if I only do one?
- The expert test. Nothing else teaches so much in ten minutes, because your child is the authority for once and the machine visibly fails in front of them.
- Are these enough on their own?
- They build understanding, which is half of it. The other half is habit, and habit needs repetition on real projects — which is why activity nine is the one to repeat rather than the one to tick off.
Adapting these for your particular child
- The child who wants to win — Make it a scoring exercise. Ten points for every mistake they catch the AI making, and they keep a running tally on the fridge. Competitive kids will interrogate a chatbot far harder than any curriculum would ask them to.
- The child who doesn't like screens — Stay in the first four. Robot sandwich and the paper sorting robot teach the underlying ideas properly, and a child who understands them will arrive at their first real AI session already calibrated.
- The child who's already very online — Skip to eight and ten. They've used AI, they think they know it, and the fastest way through that is letting them catch it fabricating something and then asking it to explain itself.
- Siblings at different ages — Run the prompt ladder together with the older one directing and the younger one judging the results. Both learn, nobody's bored, and the judging role is the more valuable one anyway.
What to do after the activities
Ten activities take a few weeks at a comfortable pace, and then there's a question of what next. The honest answer is that understanding has a ceiling and habit doesn't. Once a child knows AI predicts, that it's often wrong, and that how you ask changes what you get, further demonstrations add little. What adds a lot is doing something real with it, repeatedly, where the checking actually matters because the thing has to work.
That's why activity nine is the one to return to rather than tick off. Building something puts every idea from the other nine into use at once: the child has to be specific, test what came back, notice the mistake, and explain what they made. Do that a dozen times and the habits stop being something you have to prompt for.
