Coding vs AI for kids: which should they learn first?
Short answer: they're one skill, so start with whichever gives your child a real project fastest — and for most 7–12s that's building something by directing an AI. You get coding thinking and AI literacy in the same activity, and the "which first" worry disappears.

Begin with a small, motivating build — a simple game or a story tool — where the child directs an AI in plain language. That teaches precise instruction, testing, and cause-and-effect immediately. When your child hits something they want more control over, that's the natural moment to go deeper into the underlying code (Scratch or Python). The project pulls the fundamentals in, instead of the fundamentals gatekeeping the project.
