What age should kids start with AI?

There's no magic birthday, but there is a clear pattern: the right starting age depends far more on how a child uses AI than on the number itself. A guided, project-based tool with guardrails suits a 7-year-old; an open, unrestricted chatbot doesn't suit most 12-year-olds. Here's a practical, age-by-age way to think about it.

Age by age

  • Ages 5–6 — Mostly off-screen. Talk about how AI guesses and can be wrong. No solo chatbot use.
  • Ages 7–9 — A good time to start with a guided, project-based tool: direct an AI to build something, with a parent nearby and content guardrails on.
  • Ages 10–12 — Ready for more independence inside a safe tool — bigger projects, more checking of AI's work, still parent-visible.

The rule that matters more than age

At any age, the question is whether the child stays in charge: choosing the goal, checking the AI, and finishing something real — versus passively asking a bot for answers. A tool built for kids makes the good version the default. That's why the "what age" question really comes down to "which tool," and why open ChatGPT is the wrong first door even for older kids.
